Manhole Explosion Damages Car, Kills Power Downtown

D.C. Fire and Rescue was investigating smoke coming from a manhole Monday afternoon when there was an explosion in another manhole.

Firefighters found heavy black smoke pouring out of a manhole in the 900 block of L Street in Northwest before 3 p.m. when a manhole down the street exploded, sending asphalt into the air.

No injuries were reported, but flying debris damaged a car and traffic lights and electricity went out in the area.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. L Street was closed between Ninth and 10th streets.
