Man Who Killed Friend Over Love Triangle Sentenced to Life

The Silver Spring man convicted of fatally stabbing a friend over an apparent love triangle was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Rahul Gupta told police he killed his friend, Georgetown University law student Mark Waugh, because Gupta's girlfriend was cheating on him with Waugh. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in March.

At the time of the killing in October 2013, all three were recent college graduates from Northern Virginia.

According to charging documents, on Oct. 13, 2013, Gupta, his girlfriend, Waugh and another friend spent a night drinking and celebrating Gupta's birthday at the Silver Spring apartment where Gupta and his girlfriend lived. Around 3:25 a.m., Gupta's girlfriend called police, saying she woke up and saw Gupta kneeling next to Waugh, who was bleeding heavily, the documents say.

When officers arrived, Gupta told them he thought his girlfriend was cheating on him with Waugh.

Waugh, 23, of Great Falls, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The jury believed that this defendant killed his friend in a senseless mix of alcohol, jealousy and rage," Montgomery County State's Attorney John J. McCarthy said. "Three promising lives are now destroyed, and others affected for life."
