26-Year-Old Bereket Haile Struck, Killed During Hit-And-Run in NW DC

Metropolitan police are searching for the driver of a sedan who struck and killed 26-year-old Bereket Haile last weekend near Howard University.

Police said the incident occurred at Georgia Avenue and Girard Street, NW, around 3 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle, which fled the scene after hitting the victim, is described as a 4-door Chrysler and the windshield should have damage.

News4's Shomari Stone spoke with Haile's sister Tsion, who said she's hearbroken over her brother's death.

"He was my heart and soul," she said. "Why? Why did you leave my brother laying on the ground?"

Friends said he was in a good mood before the crash, when he had been watching the Floyd Mayweather fight at a nearby club.

"I'm still in denial," Tsion said. "I want my brother to come back."

If you have any information, you're asked to call police at 202-727-9099. D.C. police continue to investigate the crash.
