A man was shot in the chest during an attempted armed robbery Monday night at the Rockville Metro station's bus depot.

The 49-year-old man was shot at about 11:20 p.m. after he was approached by two robbers who demanded money from him. A confrontation ensued, police said, and one of the robbers pulled out a gun and fired several shots.  At least one struck the victim in the chest.

The victim ran through the Metro station and asked for help from a taxi driver who was in a standing lane on the other side of the Metro station.

Two Rockville City Police officers were making a routine traffic stop about 100 yards away at Route 355 and Truck Street and were able to assist the victim, who was transported to Suburban Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  He was treated and released.

Police are looking for the two men who were described as being 20-25 years old. One had dreadlocks or twists in his hair, and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black shirt. The second was last seen wearing black shorts, a black jacket and a black shirt.

If anyone was in the area at the time of the incident or has any information that may help, call the Rockville City Police Criminal Investigations Unit tip line at 240-314-8938.
