Man Shot After Approaching Community Center Security Guard With a Knife Charged With Assault

Guard asked man to put two dogs on leashes

A man armed with a knife shot by a security guard outside a Virginia community center in September was charged with with assault.

The security guard will not be charged.

The investigation found the guard approached 37-year-old Jamon Downing about his two dogs off leash near Gum Springs Community Center in the 8100 block of Fordson Road in Hybla Valley. The guard asked him to put the dogs on leashes as children were going to be arriving at the day care at the community center.

Downing put the dogs in his car but returned and approached the security guard armed with a knife, police said. The guard shot him once. Downing survived.

Downing drove away, but the security guard got the license plate number and police tracked the license plate number to a nearby home in the 2800 block of Joseph Makell Court, where they found the man on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Children were never in danger, police said.
