Man Killed on Way to Store in Northeast D.C.

A man was shot and killed Tuesday morning as he walked to a store in Northeast D.C.

Muhammad Washington, 20, was shot about 11:40 a.m. on the 600 block of 42nd Street NE, police said.

Washington was headed to a corner store when he was hit, according to police. He ran along 42nd Street, dropped a set of keys on freshly poured concrete and fell onto a patch of grass about a block and a half from the shooting scene. Washington was found unconscious and taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police did not immediately provide information on what preceded the attack. No one was immediately arrested.

A man who has lived in the area for three decades said he avoids leaving home because of the violence.

"It's gotten so bad out here. I try to stay out the streets here. I'm old. I'm 58 years old," he said, declining to give his name. "The violence here -- they need to do something about these guns."

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411. A $25,000 is offered.

D.C. is averaging about three homicides per week. This year so far, 120 people have been killed, in a 46 percent spike from the same time last year, when 82 people had been killed.
