Man Killed in Police-Involved Shooting Had BB Gun

The 18-year-old man killed in a police-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon had been holding a BB gun, NBC Washington's Pat Collins has learned.

D.C. Chief of Police Cathy Lanier confirmed today that the weapon held by Rafael Briscoe was a realistic-looking BB gun.

The officer who fired is a member of the police department's gun recovery unit, NBC Washington's Jackie Bensen reported yesterday. That officer, and at least one other, confronted Briscoe in the 2400 block of Elvans Road S.E. at about 2:30 p.m.

The gun recovery unit had been patrolling the neighborhood due to several recent shootings in the area.
