Man Killed in Gunfire Exchange with Police ID'd

District of Columbia police identified a robbery suspect they believe fatally shot himself after exchanging gunfire with officers earlier this week.

Metropolitan Police Department on Saturday identified the man as Benjamin Alexander Gwyn, 33, of northwest Washington.

Police said previously that officers interrupted a robbery in progress around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the popular 14th Street corridor of northwest Washington. Police said when officers tried to detain Gwyn, he pulled a gun and began fleeing.

Gwyn and police exchanged gunfire and he was found soon after with a gunshot wound to the head. No officers were injured. Police said preliminary information indicates Gwyn may have turned the gun on himself
