Man Killed Near Garden-Style Apartment Complex in Gaithersburg

Four schools sheltered in place

Four schools sheltered in place in Gaithersburg, Md., after a man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon.

Montgomery County police and Gaithersburg City Police responded to a report of shots fired near a garden-style apartment complex in the 400 block of North Summit Avenue about 2:30 p.m. They found 25-year-old Michael Kirby Alvarado suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described two males leaving the scene and police searched the area with K-9 teams and a state police helicopter but did not find anyone.

Dismissal was delayed at Forest Oak Middle, Gaithersburg Elementary, Gaithersburg Middle and Washington Grove Elementary schools as they sheltered in place. The shelter in place was lifted after 4 p.m.
