Missing Man Found Trapped Under Large Tree Limb in Md.

Vietnam vet Larry Shaday had been missing for a week

A Vietnam veteran who had been missing for a week was found alive Monday, trapped under a large tree limb in Prince George's County.

Larry Merton Shaday, 66, was found in the 9000 block of Ardwick-Ardmore Road, a short distance from where he was last seen at about 1 a.m. on July 20. Police say Shaday lives in an elder care home in the 8900 block of the same road, in the Springdale section of Prince George's County.

Shortly before he disappeared last week, Shaday told people at his home that he was going for a walk, but he never returned.

He may have slipped down an embankment and became lodged under a fallen tree, reported News4's Pat Collins.

Around noon Monday, someone walking down the road spotted Shaday under the tree, and flagged down a county employee who called the fire department.

Shaday was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital. An official said Shaday needs medical treatment but will survive.

"He is not going to die as a result of this incident," he said.

Friends said it wasn't like Shaday to walk off by himself, especially not late at night. However, the friends said he had been diagnosed with cancer recently and that may have something to do with it.

The woman who runs the elder care home said Shaday also has dementia, but she didn't think he was being treated for it.

"We've been praying a lot for him and we are so happy that he survived, because to be honest, we thought this was the end of it," she said.

Shaday has been living at the home for the past two years.
