A man was found dead inside a burning apartment in Woodbridge, Virginia, Monday night, and police are working to figure out what happened.

Simeon Saplan Lim, 54, was pronounced dead after he was found in a home on the 3500 block of Sherbrooke Circle.

Firefighters were called to the building just after 11:30 p.m. Monday.

During a search of the apartment, they found an unconscious man. He later was pronounced dead.

One of Lim's neighbors said police asked him if he heard gunshots during the night. But the man told News4 he only heard the fire alarm.

Neighbor Katie Gemmell said she heard the fire alarm and smelled smoke in the hallway.

"Everyone on my level came outside to see what was going on, and we called 911," she said.

Lim's cause of death and the cause of the fire are under investigation.
