Police investigate a death outside the Watergate Hotel.

An elderly man was found badly wounded Wednesday morning near the Watergate Hotel and later died at a local hospital.

Police are calling the death "suspicious."

The man was found at about 9:30 a.m. on a sidewalk in the courtyard of the upscale Potomac Plaza Apartments, located in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue NW.  The building is across the street from the Watergate Hotel.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses said the area where the man was found was very bloody and that there were numerous garments and bags, typically associated with the homeless, in the area.

No further information was immediately available.

  • bean Thursday, Dec 25 at 2:20 PM FLAG COMMENT this is so tragic and the community mourns this loss. Please don't trivialize this death, as he was a very gentle soul and loved by many. I can only imagine how terrified he was facing his attacker. This is the third horrific hate crime against homeless folks in the Foggy Bottom area in several weeks. I pray he is at peace now.

  • David B Thursday, Dec 25 at 8:26 AM FLAG COMMENT The Watergate Hotel has been closed for OVER a year. I'll let you know when it becomes a student dorm for George Washington University (the current rumor...maybe this is a news story for you!). Get your facts straight. Potomac Plaza is across the street from Watergate East (a residential cooperative). Why not say this happened a block from the Kennedy Center or Saudi Embassy...if grabbing attention is your goal here? And ... MORE >
  • Detective in Mont. Villag Wednesday, Dec 24 at 9:34 PM FLAG COMMENT How do people deal with the crime in the malls and on the streets? Homeless people from shelters that go to malls to pandhandle and shoplift have nothing to lose and one of them said "prison is beautiful and sweet" and go on to say that "prison gives me a warm place to stay and that is good so I make trouble in the malls so I can go to the can" and that is becoming more common due to the bad economy and cold weather.
