Man Faces Terror Charge After IED Explodes in Williamsburg

Police arrested a man at his Virginia home on Friday, a day after an improvised explosive device detonated in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The explosion occurred in a parking lot at the intersection of South Boundary Streeet and Francis near Colonial Williamsburg and The College of William & Mary, which is celebrating homecoming, about 6 p.m. on Oct. 19.

No one was injured in the explosion, police said.

Police identified Stephen Powers, 30, of Gloucester, Virginia, as the suspect and arrested him at his home. He was charged with possession of and using an explosive device, and committing an act of terrorism.

“I would personally like to thank all the local, state and federal law enforcement partners who worked around the clock to quickly apprehend a potentially dangerous member of the community,” Williamsburg police Chief Sean Dunn said.

The Williamsburg Police Department believed this was an isolated incident. However, out of an abundance of caution, the police department is taking additional measures in the area, and guests visiting Colonial Williamsburg or attending William & Mary homecoming events, including the homecoming parade, may see a visible increase in law enforcement presence.
