Fairfax County Police and Fire officials responded to calls of a capsized kayak yesterday.
A brief helicopter search over Pohick Bay led Fairfax County Fire officials to John R. Funk of Lorton, Va. around 3:30 pm.
The 58-year-old was last seen fishing from his kayak in the bay on Monday. Witnesses say he attempted to swim the nearly 100 yards to shore without a flotation device after the kayak overturned.
Funk disappeared beneath the water before first responders arrived. A flotation device was not located in the kayak. He was transported to Mt. Vernon hospital by ground. It is unclear what caused the kayak to flip over.
