The Metropolitan Police Department said a man died after fighting with four police officers and being placed in handcuffs.

Anthony Chambers, 38, became combative with officers who were called to help staff from the Department of Mental Health about 3 p.m. Friday, police said. Chambers assaulted four police officers who eventually subdued him and placed him in handcuffs, police said.

Chambers then lost consciousness and died at a local hospital, officers said. The cause of death is not known; an autopsy will be performed.

The four officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were placed on administrative leave, police said.
