Man Dies After Bike Accident in Northwest

Police: Tied-down property came loose and lodged in spokes

D.C. Police are investigating the death of a bicyclist early Saturday morning in Northwest Washington.

Antonio Alvarez-Benitez, 28, of Northwest, was pronounced dead at a local hospital of injuries sustained in an accident.

Alvarez-Benitez was found unconscious by police shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Morton Street, Northwest. Investigators say that the accident was caused by tied-down property coming loose, falling to the ground, and lodging in the front fender, spokes and forks of Alvarez-Benitez' bike, causing him to lose control and fall.
