A Silver Spring man has been convicted of running a romance scam on the internet that defrauded victims of more than $600,000.
A federal jury in Greenbelt on Wednesday convicted 27-year-old Evans Appiah on conspiracy, mail and wire fraud, and identity theft charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release that Appiah and his co-conspirators initiated romantic relationships with men and women they found on dating websites.
Prosecutors say after gaining the victims' trust, Appiah and his co-conspirators began asking victims to send them money.
Appiah faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at sentencing on Aug. 29.
