Man Convicted in Death of Girlfriend's Toddler

Sharmell Thomas said the 1-year-old girl had a seizure, but medical examiners said she died of abusive head trauma

A 23-year-old man has been convicted of manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter.

A Baltimore City Circuit Court jury convicted Sharmell Thomas on Thursday. He faces a maximum of 40 years in prison at sentencing.

Thomas was sitting for the little girl, identified by the Baltimore Sun as Desmare Braxton, on June 13 when he called 911 to report she was not breathing.

She was taken to University of Maryland Medical Center, where she later died, the Sun reported.

Thomas said the girl had a seizure, WBALTV.com reported, but medical examiners said she died of abusive head trauma.

Hospital officials said they found bruises on the little girl's body.
