A man entered a University of Maryland student's home through a window early Friday morning, got into her bed while she slept and sexually assaulted her, police said.

Police believe the suspect used a chair to climb in the first-floor window of the home at about 4 a.m. just off the Maryland campus in the 4200 block of Knox Road.

"He touched her inappropriately," said Prince George's County Corporal Mike Rodriguez.  "She screamed and the suspect fled."

The victim described the suspect as white, about 20 years old, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

She said he had medium-length hair that was black or possibly dark brown.

Police are urging residents to be careful.

"Make sure your doors and windows are locked, draw your shades, leave a light on in some part of the house," Rodriguez said.

Campus officials urge students to keep a eye on their neighborhood, and, if they see anything even remotely suspicious, to call police.
