Man Charged in Cold Case Sex Assaults Near Georgetown University

The attacker awoke two victims at home in their beds

More than a decade after a man awoke two strangers in their own homes and sexually assaulted them, police have made an arrest.

Benjamin Filoberto Paz, 53, was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexually assaulting one victim near Georgetown University in 2002 and a second victim on the same block in 2004.

Paz, of Montgomery Village, Maryland, attacked the first victim on June 16, 2002, D.C. police said. She was asleep in her home on the 3300 block of Prospect Street NW when a stranger broke in, awoke her and attacked her. Then, he fled.

The second offense occurred on Feb. 22, 2004, when a different victim was sleeping in her home on the same block. Again, police say Paz broke in, awoke the victim and attacked her.

Paz was charged on Wednesday with first-degree sexual abuse as well as five other charges.

D.C. police declined to provide information on how the Metropolitan Police Department's Cold Case Unit broke the case.
