Man Charged With Murder in SE Fire That Killed Girl

A man who escaped a house fire that killed a 4-year-old girl was charged second-degree murder, D.C. police said.

Jerome Calvary Lewis, 46, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Samauri Jenkins.

Jenkins died Tuesday at a hospital, where she was taken after Sunday's fire. Several other people, including Lewis, escaped the blaze.

An autopsy found that the child died from injuries sustained in the fire, police said. On Friday her death was ruled a homicide.

The cause and origin of the fire are still being investigated.
