Man Attempts to Build Ill-Gotten Segway Fleet

If, say, you were the type of person willing to risk possible imprisonment in order to purchase high-priced consumer goods illegally, what type of items would you go after?

Jewelry? Electronics? Vehicles? A combination of various luxury items?

How about three Segways? Figure you need one for work, one for pleasure and one solely for reserve purposes, because who knows how wild you'll get on those Segways.

Okay, you probably wouldn't buy three Segways. But one D.C. man did, and now police have caught up with him, The Washington Post reported.

Police allege that Remond Coates, 27, used a fake name and a fraudulent credit card to purchase three Segways on Aug. 12 and Aug. 15 from Capitol Segway in the 1300 block of I Street NW. The total bill: $11,650. After the store's clerks learned this month that the purchases had been made with a fraudulent credit card, they called police.

As an added bonus of audacity, at the time of the purchases Coates was free on personal recognizance after being charged in April for conspiring to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. So you think there'd have been some red flags at the Segway store.
