Man Arrested in Death of Maryland Woman Shot Before Crashing Car Into Building

Police have arrested the man suspected of killing a Hillcrest Heights, Maryland woman who was found shot earlier this month inside a car that crashed into an apartment building.

Joseph Poteat, 29, was arrested by Prince George's County police on Tuesday on charges he killed Marquita Wimms, 32.

Wimms died Oct. 3 after she was found in a car that crashed into an apartment building on the 1900 block of Rochelle Avenue in District Heights. Police responded about 10:45 p.m. and found Wimms inside with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Her car hit the apartment building hard enough that 27 residents had to be evacuated because of structural damage. Poteat lives in that building, police previously said.

He will be charged with first- and second-degree murder, and related charges. Detectives previously said they were working to uncover a motive in the killing of Wimms.

"She's a great person -- a wonderful person," longtime friend Douglas Peeples said.
