Man Arrested for Sex Abuse Near Georgetown University: Police

A man was arrested early Saturday morning after police say he ran up to a female and groped her while she was walking near Georgetown University's campus in D.C.

D.C. police said the assault happened about 1 a.m. in the 3300 block of Prospect Street NW.

Officers were on heightened patrol in the area when they saw a female walking on the sidewalk and they immediately noticed the suspect following closely behind her. Within seconds, the suspect ran up behind her and groped her, police said.

The victim and suspect ran off. Officers stopped the suspect and arrested him.

Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Sergio Waldo Velaquez-Cardozo, of Falls Church, Virginia. Velaquez-Cardozo has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse.

A series of assaults have been reported in the Georgetown area, police announced earlier this week. It is not known if this assault is connected to those previous assaults.
