Man Accused in D.C. Detective's Death to Go on Trial

A man accused of killing his stepfather, who was a District of Columbia police detective, is set to go on trial for murder.

Antwan James is charged in the fatal shooting of Joseph Newell at the family's home in Upper Marlboro.

Prince George's County prosecutors say James shot Newell several times after Newell asked the younger man to help him with yard work.

According to a police affidavit, around 8 p.m., Newell asked James to help him change a light over the garage. James got angry and refused.

James' mother yelled at him for not helping, and, according to the police document, James said, "Oh yeah? Watch this."

The killing was captured on surveillance video from a nearby home. Police say the video shows Newell  being shot in the back while standing on a ladder to change a light bulb outside his home's garage.

James' trial is scheduled to begin Monday morning.
