Alexandria Police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year.

Officers were called to the 700 block of N. Fayette Street just after 11:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found 22-year-old Shakkan Elliot-Tibbs of Woodbridge suffering from a gunshot wound. Elliot-Tibbs was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

Elliot-Tibbs had been hanging out with a cousin and was on his way to Metro to meet his mother at the Springfield station and continue home to Woodbridge together. His mother, Linda Tibbs, told News4 her son was very protective of her.

His girlfriend said Elliot-Tibbs planned to finish school, marry her and start a family.

    No arrests have been made.

Police believe there were witnesses to the shooting. Anyone with information that can help police is asked to call 703-746-6689.
