Major Traffic Problem on Beltway Near Springfield

Report of fallen sign

A major traffic issue caused problems on the Beltway in Virginia Wednesday morning.

All lanes of the Inner Loop were closed at the tail-end of the morning rush because of debris on the road near the Springfield Interchange.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said a truck struck an overhead sign on Interstate 95 South near exit 170B about 9 a.m. Pieces of the sign fell onto the Beltway.

At 11 a.m. traffic was getting by on right shoulder to get to exit 170B and then proceeding to 395 North.  After midday, traffic flow had returned to normal.

No injuries were reported.

The Inner Loop reopened before noon.

VDOT could not offer an initial estimate on the repair time.
