Machete-Wielding Attacker Sentenced to Life

A 30-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for attacking two brothers outside of an Arlington County library with a machete.

According to police, Derrick Sutherland approached the victims outside of Arlington's Central Library on Abram Street on June 24, 2013 and began arguing with them. The argument escalated, and Sutherland struck the victims several times with a machete.

Both victims suffered severe injuries, including the inability to use extremities and the loss of an eye.

Sutherland was arrested a few hours after the attack in the area of Wilson Boulevard and North Piedmont Street.
