Loudoun County school officials will consider closing four small schools in the western part of the county to help close a budget gap.

The county school board has voted to hold a public hearing on the matter on April 21.

Board Chairman Eric Hornberger says closing Lincoln, Hamilton, Hillsboro and Aldie elementary schools could save an estimated $2 million a year in operating costs.

Supporters of the schools say they have been centers in their communities for generations, but some board members argue that the cost of maintaining the old schools with tiny enrollments doesn't make sense.
