A 19-year-old soldier from Maryland was identified Tuesday as one of five people shot to death at a military counseling clinic at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq.
Yates had been at the clinic for about five days when the shooting happened, Machlinski said. She said he had trouble readjusting to life in Iraq after a recent visit home.
Yates's mother said her son called and talked to her on Mother's Day, and they had talked about the alleged shooter, Sgt. John Russell. She said her son said he was "someone with issues."
Michael Edward Yates Jr. is survived by a young son.
He attended Colonel Richardson High School in Federalsburg and was being remembered on his Myspace page Tuesday night as a good friend taken far too soon.
