Overnight Rain and Show Leads to Icy Roads, Multiple Crashes

Snow and rain fell in the D.C. region Wednesday evening, making for an icy Valentine's Day commute -- and multiple accidents have been reported as a result.

The snow accumulated on grassy areas and melted on roadways, but as the roads and bridges stayed wet overnight, they started to freeze. Be careful -- what may look wet to drivers and pedestrians may actually be ice, said StormTeam4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein.

Leave yourself extra time to reach your destination this morning.

Temperatures around dawn were still at or below freezing, but should rise to near 50 degrees by mid-afternoon, Kierein said.

Accidents have been reported around the region as a result of the icy conditions, leading to lane closures and delays.

The inbound lanes of the Arlington Memorial Bridge were shut down for nearly 90 minutes due to a crash and reopened around 7:30 a.m. One person was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries as a result of that accident.

The Waysons Corner Bridge was also temporarily shut down due to an accident. It reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Several highway on-ramps around the region were also briefly shut down as a safety precaution due to icy conditions.

Metro says that the R2 Metrobus is experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes due to a multi-vehicle accident at Riggs Road & Powder Mill Road. The delays were continuing as of 8:30 a.m.
