The Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation has ended its 25-year-old leaf pickup program in an effort to shave $2 million from next year's budget.

In previous years, county residents could simply rake their leaves to the curb. Special vacuum-equipped trucks would then come by, suck them up and dispose of them. Not anymore. Residents are now required to bag their leaves and place them on the curb for pickup.

Residents who continue to pile leaves curbside, without bagging them, face fines from the county.

The program cut is expected to be permanent.
