Laurel Fire Leaves Several Homeless

Three-alarm fire breaks out in apartment building

Several families have been left homeless after a three-alarm fire in Laurel early Sunday morning.

Investigators say that the the fire broke out shortly before 4 a.m. at 3571 Laurel Fort Meade Road. Anne Arundel County firefighters responded and found the fire on the third floor of the six-story apartment building.

Eventually, 70 firefighters responded to the scene before the blaze was brought under control. No injuries were reported to either firefighters or civilians.

One resident, Loriel Valencia, managed to get out alongside her daughter and brother, but only after hearing someone else's smoke alarm. The one in her building failed to go off.

"The only reason I came out was because the smoke was coming out of the vent," she said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
