Frostburg State University Student Lateef Gazal Dies in Fire

Lateef Gazal, a 23-year-old Frostburg State University student, passed away during a fire last Friday morning.

News4's Tracee Wilkins spoke with Femi Owojo, Gazal's roommate and friend.

"I really don't know what to do now," Owojo said. "I was praying that no one was in the house [during the fire]."

Crews responded to the off-campus home during the early morning hours Friday. Owojo and another roommate were able to escape on time, but Gazal was trapped.

"I just woke up and I heard someone yelling," Owojo said. "At the time I didn't know what it was. I tried to go back in the room and I couldn't. It was already too late. It was all smokey so I couldn't go back in."

Gazal moved to Bowie from London as a child. A few years ago, he decided to attended Frostburg State with his cousin. He started a popular campus clothing line.

"He puts hours the whole day working, designing. That's one thing me and my friends are going to continue," Owojo said.
