D.C. Considers Extending Alcohol Sale Hours

Mayor Gray said the extension could generate at least $3 million a year

Last call soon may come an hour later in the District.

The D.C. Council is considering letting restaurants and bars serve alcohol until 3 a.m. during the week and 4 a.m. on the weekends. Right now, they have to cut off serving at 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray has said the extension could generate at least $3 million a year, but the idea comes with some hesitation. D.C. Councilman Jim Graham worries the extra hour of alcohol sales could cause rowdy crowds in neighborhoods such as the U Street Corridor and Adams Morgan.

A hearing for public comment on the proposal began at 5 p.m. Tuesday in room 500 of the Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.
