Large Fire Sends Flames Pouring From Alexandria Apartment

An Alexandria, Virginia, apartment building was evacuated early Thursday morning after a large fire sent flames pouring from a ninth floor apartment.

The fire started about 2 a.m. at the Sentinel at Landmark building on Stevenson Avenue.

Fire officials say the fire began in a ninth floor apartment before it spread to the floor above. Falling debris also started a fire on a balcony on the first floor.

Residents inside the building were safely evacuated, but the man who lives in the apartment where the fire started was taken to the hospital. He is expected to be OK.

The fire has been extinguished. The cause is under investigation.
