Knox Boxes to Be Demolished in College Park

An off-campus institution with a rowdy reputation at the University of Maryland is slated for demolition.

Tenants of most of the Knox Box apartments in College Park have until Nov. 30 to move out of the units. They are scheduled for demolition to be replaced with a new mixed-use development dubbed Terrapin Row.

Toll Brothers Inc. has closed a deal to acquire 22 of the 29 the Knox Boxes, and is encouraging residents to move out early. Residents received emails this week offering gift cards of $500 or $750 if they move out this month. The Daily Record reported.

"Toll Brothers Campus Living is working with affected residents to help them find another place to live," read a statement from Toll Brothers.

The company has hired Greystone Asset Management to assist residents during this period of transition. Greystone staff members are on site assisting residents and have already contacted other apartment communities in College Park to provide housing alternatives for affected Knox Box residents.

Toll Brothers Campus Living recognizes the inconvenience caused to Knox Box residents and will do what it can to help residents find new housing. Due to the terms of the purchase contract, Toll Brothers Campus Living has only now been able to begin notifying affected residents.

The aging Knox Boxes, easily recognized by the boxy appearance of the duplex-style apartments, are largely inhabited by students and for decades have been known for hosting some of the school's wildest parties.
