Jury for Currie Trial Reconvenes Monday

Maryland state senator accused of bribery

The jury in a bribery case against former Maryland State Sen. Ulysses Currie reconvenes Monday.

Currie, a Democrat from Prince George's County, is charged with bribery, conspiracy, extortion and making false statements for allegedly using the power of his office to do political favors for Shoppers Food Warehouse.

The trial started last month and went to the jury late Thursday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. Friday was their first full day of deliberations.

Currie, 74, stepped down from his post as chair of the state's Senate Budget and Taxation Committee when he was indicted last September, but he was elected to a fifth term in November 2010.

Two former Shoppers Food Warehouse executives also are on trial for allegedly conspiring with the senator.
