Johns Hopkins Student Didn't Intend to Kill Intruder With Sword

BALTIMORE -- Investigators don't believe a Johns Hopkins University student had "the intent to kill" when he grabbed a samurai sword to search his property for an intruder, Baltimore police said.

John Pontolillo, 20, of New Jersey, ended up killing a man with the sword in the fenced courtyard behind his off-campus home, which he shares with three other students.

Police released additional details Thursday morning about the incident. While police initially reported that the intruder was hiding in a detached garage behind the home, police said they've determined that 49-year-old Donald Rice was in fact hiding in the courtyard between the porch and the garage.

Rice lunged at Pontolillo, who killed him with a single blow from the sword, police said. Pontolillo has not been charged with a crime.
