Jogger Sexually Assaulted Near Meridian Hill Malcom X Park

Joggers in D.C. held a workout rally Thursday morning following the kidnapping and sexual assault of a fellow jogger near Meridian Hill Park.

Police say 24-year-old Glenvert Leon Green followed the woman as she jogged across 15th Street from the park. He allegedly grabbed her and dragged her into an alley where he sexually assaulted her about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, sources told News4.

Following the assault, police posted a video and asked for the public's help to identify the person of interest.

Green of southeast D.C. was arrested Wednesday and charged with kidnapping, first-degree sexual abuse and robbery.

The park has a history of crime, but community activists said it's become safer recently.

"It was the most violent, crime-ridden national park in the entire region, and the community reclaimed it and reduced crime by over 99 percent," said Stephen Coleman of the charity Parks and People.

"It's a very sad reminder that our work is not done," he said.

Parks and People scheduled a workout rally at 6:30 a.m. Thursday to bring attention to the issue of sexual assault and efforts to prevent these incidents from happening.
