A Maryland prison inmate who was found unresponsive after an assault has died.

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of Ronnie Harris, 56, who was found Wednesday night on a housing tier at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died about 4 p.m. Thursday.

Harris' body has been taken to the D.C. medical examiner's office for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, police said.

Maryland State Police are investigating with help from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigations Unit.
