ICC Sees Drop in Drivers on First Pay Day

Fewer vehicles for highway's first toll day

The toll-free “preview” of the new Intercounty Connector may not have been a great predictor of traffic on the new highway.

On its first day of charging, the ICC saw a big drop in drivers.

Maryland transportation officials said about 2,100 vehicles traveled the ICC during the Monday morning rush. That’s down from 5,500 who traveled during peak hours when the trip was free.

Traveling the seven-mile stretch between Gaithersburg and Olney will cost you $1.45 during the morning and evening rush.

Once the ICC is completed, it will span more than 18 miles and connect Interstate 270 and Interstate 95 in Laurel.
