A team of carpenters turned part of the National Mall into a traditional Hungarian village for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
An award-winning Hungarian architect designed the buildings for this year's “Hungarian Roots to Revival'' program, combining features from traditional Hungarian styles and more modern American structures.
A 14th-generation family furniture-maker from Transylvania who helped build the village says the buildings “give you the feeling of what it is like in Hungary.''
Bringing craftsmen from their native countries to build structures for the annual festival in Washington has been done before, but not to this scale.
Coordinators expect more than 1 million people will attend the festival. It runs through Sunday.
