Hundreds Lose Water Due to Broken Main in Largo

Almost 600 WSSC customers lost water this Thanksgiving due to a broken 16-inch water main in the Largo area.

The broken main at 10305 New Orchard Drive was reported about 4:30 a.m., and water in the area was shut off by 6:45 a.m. All affected customers live in a subdivision accessed by New Orchard and Harry Truman drives.

Service was restored to many customers, but a boil water advisory was issued as a precaution. Customers in the area should boil water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food. Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute and cool before using.

WSSC is handing out six-gallon cases of water at the corner of New Orchard Drive and Butterworth Lane.

Regular service should be restored to everyone Thursday evening, at which point the boil advisory remains in place for 36-48 hours.

The cause of the break is unknown.

The pipe was installed in 1974.
