Human Remains Found on Site of Woodbridge Townhouse Fire

A day after a man went missing following a fire in a Woodbridge, Virginia, home, human remains were found inside, police say.

Firefighters and Prince William County police responded to a raging fire on Ponderosa Court about 2:40 a.m. The blaze displaced six adults and three children, and one firefighter received a minor injury.

Fire crews were unable to search the inside of the home Wednesday because the structure was unsafe, police said. As the investigation continued, they learned a resident was unaccounted for.

A crane was used to secure the townhouse Thursday so investigators could search inside. Human remains then were found, police said.

Police sent the remains to the medical examiner for identification.

During the blaze, a man arrived and screamed, "My dad, my dad," neighbor Joyce Shingler said Wednesday, beginning to cry. That man needed to be restrained, she and other neighbors said.

Information on the cause of the fire was not immediately available.
