Human remains were discovered in a wooded area in Laurel, Md., on Sunday.

Authorities received a call around noon from a man who said that he and his girlfriend had found what appeared to be a human skull while hiking in the woods near Spring Road and Whiskey Bottom Road.

The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore and were confirmed to be human, police said.

The deceased person's identity and cause of death are still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities at 410-222-3460.
