Heavy storms appear to have washed up human bones near the George Washington Memorial Parkway, U.S. Park Police say.
U.S. Park Police responded on July 11 to reports of bones found near the parkway and Four Mile Run, which is in Arlington near Reagan National Airport, according to a press release.
Police conducted multiple searches and involved at least one special operations K-9 from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, United States Park Police told News4.
The search dog, Kylie, was assisting a K-9 handler on Tuesday when she was impaled by a piece of metal rebar sticking out of the ground. Her injuries were so grave that Park Police halted traffic on the GW Parkway to medevac her via helicopter to Friendship Hospital for Animals in Tenleytown, but she has since left the hospital and is on her way to recovery.
After several days of searching, police found three human bones — including a skull — in a creek bed.
The bones were found strewn over about 200 yards, leading police to believe that the remains may have washed up during recent heavy storms.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia is set to examine the bones, police say. The U.S. Park Police are investigating.
