How Users Can Enable ‘Cookies' on their Web Browsers

Trying to vote in a NBCWashington contest? Did you get a pop-up that asked you to "please enable cookies in order to participate"?

Below is what to do. Remember that you can reset these settings after you vote -- and remember to always read the contest's rules before you enter.

First, pick the internet browser that you use: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, iPhone or iPad, Android. (Not sure which browser you use? Click here.)

Internet Explorer (versions 8-10):

  • At the top of your screen, click on the "Tools" menu
  • Click on "Internet Options"
  • Click on the "Privacy" tab
  • Move the slider to "Accept all Cookies"
  • Click "Apply"

Firefox 7.0 and up

  • At the top of your screen, click on the "Tools" menu
  • Click on "Options"
  • Click on the "Privacy" tab
  • Under the "History" section, click the drop-down menu and choose "use custom settings for history"
  • Make sure "Accept cookies from sites" is checked
  • Click "OK"

Firefox for Mac

  • Click on the "Firefox" menu in the upper left of the screen
  • Click on "Preferences"
  • Click on the "Privacy" tab
  • Under the "History" section, click the drop-down menu and choose "use custom settings for history"
  • Make sure "Accept cookies from sites" is checked
  • Click "OK"

Google Chrome for PC

  • Click the menu (it's three horizontal lines, at the top right of the screen)
  • Click on "Settings"
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on "Show advanced settings"
  • Under "Privacy," Click on "Content Settings"
  • Make sure the top option, "Allow local data to be set" is clicked

Chrome for Mac

  • Click on the "Chrome" menu in the upper left of the screen
  • Click on "Settings"
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on "Show advanced settings"
  • Under "Privacy," Click on "Content Settings"
  • Make sure the top option, "Allow local data to be set" is clicked

Safari

  • Click on the "Safari" menu in the upper left of the screen
  • Click on "Preferences"
  • Click on the "Privacy" tab
  • Make sure that "Never" is selected under "Block cookies and other website data"

iPhone or iPad

  • From the home screen
  • Tap the 'Settings' icon
  • Scroll down to 'Safari'
  • Under "Privacy and Security" make sure "Block Cookies" is set to "Never"

Android

  • Click "Menu Items"
  • Select "Settings"
  • Select "Privacy and Security"
  • Be sure that "Accept Cookies" is check marked
