How Safe Is Your Cruise Ship? Inside the Data

It’s supposed to be the type of vacation where you just sit back and relax. But for some, a cruise can turn into dangerous – even deadly – experience.

Our reporting partner ProPublica created this website that anyone planning a cruise should check out before they hit the water.

It shows where problems typically happen on ships. For example: at least seven children have drowned in pools on well-known lines since 2012; about 20 people fall overboard each year.

And inspections routinely find problems with lifeboats. Sex assaults are the number-one crime reported on cruise ships.

If you have a particular ship or cruise line you want to check out, type in their name to read in detail what has been reported on board and what the U.S. Coast Guard found during its inspections.
