Mac McGarry, a staff announcer with NBC since 1950, has stepped down as host of the quiz show It's Academic.

McGarry is known for his meticulous pronounciation, humor and an occasional predilection for breaking into song during the program.

In a career that has stretched across half a century, Mac MacGarry announced the start of the Korean War and introduced President Harry Truman at the White House. He began broadcasting before the advent of color television.

It's Academic has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest running quiz show on television.  The program is celebrating its 51st season on NBC4 in Washington.
